Journal of Materials Research Communications
Aims & Scope
Journal of Materials Research Communications (JMRC) publishes high-quality research that advances the understanding, design, processing and application of materials. The journal serves researchers, engineers and practitioners in universities, research laboratories and industry worldwide.
Aims
- To communicate significant new findings in materials science and engineering rapidly, rigorously and openly.
- To connect fundamental materials research with processing, performance and real-world application.
- To encourage interdisciplinary work that brings together physics, chemistry, engineering, biology and data science.
- To support reproducible research through clear reporting of methods and open sharing of data.
- To offer a fair, transparent and constructive publishing experience to authors from every region of the world.
Scope
JMRC welcomes experimental, theoretical and computational studies on all classes of materials, including, but not limited to, the following areas.
| Subject area | Typical topics |
|---|---|
| Metals and alloys | Physical metallurgy, phase transformations, microstructure–property relationships, lightweight, high-temperature and high-entropy alloys |
| Ceramics and glasses | Structural and functional ceramics, glasses and glass-ceramics, refractories, sintering and ceramic processing |

| Electronic, magnetic and optical materials | Semiconductors, dielectrics, ferroelectrics, magnetic, photonic and quantum materials |
| Biomaterials | Materials for implants and medical devices, tissue engineering, drug delivery and biocompatibility |
| Surface engineering, corrosion and tribology | Surface treatments, corrosion and oxidation, wear, friction and degradation |
| Advanced manufacturing and processing | Additive manufacturing, powder processing, casting, forming, joining and machining |
| Characterisation and testing | Electron microscopy, diffraction, spectroscopy, and mechanical, thermal and in-situ testing |
| Computational and data-driven materials science | First-principles and multiscale modelling, ICME, materials informatics and machine learning |
Article types
| Type | Purpose | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Research Article | A complete, original study that makes a significant contribution | 4,000–8,000 words; abstract up to 250 words |
| Review Article | A critical, comprehensive assessment of an active research area | 8,000–12,000 words; abstract up to 300 words |
| Short Communication | A concise report of important new findings that merit rapid publication | Up to 3,000 words and four figures or tables; abstract up to 200 words |
| Editorial | Commentary on the journal and its field | By invitation |
Word counts exclude the abstract, references, figure captions and tables. Longer manuscripts may be considered where the content justifies it.
What we look for
Manuscripts are assessed on originality, scientific rigour, clarity and relevance to the international materials community. Studies that report only routine characterisation, incremental variations of known materials without new insight, or results without an adequate discussion of their significance are unlikely to be accepted. Work that is primarily about a device or an application should make a clear contribution to the understanding of the materials involved.
Readership
JMRC is written for materials scientists, metallurgists, chemists, physicists and engineers working in universities, research institutes and industry, and for students and practitioners who need reliable, openly accessible research.
