Author Guidelines

JMRC welcomes original manuscripts in all areas of materials science and engineering. Please read the complete Author Guidelines (in the For Authors menu) before you submit. In summary:

  • Article types: Research Articles, Review Articles and Short Communications. Editorials are published by invitation.
  • Language and files: manuscripts must be written in clear English and submitted as an editable Word (.docx) file or as a PDF generated from LaTeX, with figures and tables either embedded or supplied as separate files.
  • Anonymised review: JMRC uses double-anonymous peer review. Upload a separate title page with author names, affiliations and declarations, and remove identifying information from the main manuscript file.
  • Structure: title, abstract (up to 250 words for Research Articles), 4–6 keywords, main text, declarations and numbered references with DOIs where available.
  • Declarations: author contributions (CRediT), funding, competing interests, data availability and any use of generative AI tools must be stated.
  • Originality: the work must not be published or under consideration elsewhere. All submissions are screened for similarity to published work.
  • Fees: there is no submission fee. An article processing charge (APC) is payable after acceptance; the amount is given on the Article Processing Charges page (For Authors menu).

Submission Preparation Checklist

Before submitting, please confirm that your submission meets all of the following requirements.

  • The manuscript is original, has not been published before and is not under consideration by another journal (posting a preprint is permitted).
  • All authors have approved the submission, agree with its content and meet the journal's authorship criteria.
  • The main manuscript file has been anonymised for double-anonymous peer review, and a separate title page with author details has been prepared.
  • The manuscript follows the Author Guidelines, including the abstract length, 4–6 keywords and the numbered reference style, with DOIs given where available.
  • Figures have sufficient resolution (at least 300 dpi) and every figure and table is cited in the text.
  • Permission has been obtained to reproduce any previously published figures, tables or text.
  • Declarations are included: author contributions, funding, competing interests, data availability and any use of generative AI tools.
  • The authors agree to publish the work open access under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0).

Research Articles

Research Articles report complete, original studies that make a significant contribution to materials science or engineering. They are typically 4,000–8,000 words long (excluding references), with an abstract of up to 250 words and 4–6 keywords, and are subject to double-anonymous peer review by at least two independent reviewers.

Review Articles

Review Articles provide a critical, comprehensive and balanced assessment of the state of the art in an active area of materials research, identifying open questions and future directions. They are typically 8,000–12,000 words long, with an abstract of up to 300 words. Authors are encouraged to send a short proposal to the editorial office before submitting. Reviews are peer reviewed in the same way as Research Articles.

Short Communications

Short Communications are concise reports of important new findings that merit rapid dissemination. They are up to 3,000 words long, with no more than four figures or tables and an abstract of up to 200 words, and are peer reviewed with priority handling.

Privacy Statement

The Journal of Materials Research Communications (JMRC) respects the privacy of its authors, reviewers, editors and readers. This statement explains what personal data the journal collects through this website, why it is collected and how it is protected.

Data we collect

  • Account information that you provide when you register: your name, email address, affiliation and country and, optionally, your ORCID iD, biography and reviewing interests.
  • Submission information: manuscripts and supporting files, author details, correspondence and peer review reports.
  • Usage information: aggregated statistics on article views and downloads, and the technical data (such as IP address and browser type) that the web server processes to deliver and secure the site.

How we use your data

Personal data are used only to run the journal: to process and review submissions, to communicate with authors, reviewers and editors, to publish articles with their author information and to compile anonymised statistics. JMRC does not sell personal data and does not use them for unrelated marketing.

What is published

For published articles, author names, affiliations, ORCID iDs and any other information included in the article become part of the public scholarly record. This metadata is shared with indexing and discovery services, for example through OAI-PMH, so that the work can be found and cited. The identities of reviewers are never published.

Who can see your data

Submission and review information is available only to the editors and staff handling the manuscript and, in anonymised form, to its reviewers. The journal's hosting provider processes data on the journal's behalf under appropriate safeguards.

Cookies and third-party services

This website uses essential session cookies to keep you signed in; it does not use advertising or tracking cookies. Web fonts may be loaded from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when a page is displayed.

Retention

Account data are kept while your account is active. Records of submissions and peer review are kept for as long as necessary to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record. You may ask for your account to be closed at any time.

Your rights

You may request access to, correction of or deletion of your personal data, or object to its processing, subject to the journal's obligation to preserve the published record. To make a request, please contact the editorial office using the details on the Contact page. You can update most of your details yourself from your user profile.
